Background Info
Fox McCloud is an intergalatic fighter pilot who stars in the StarFox
series of games. For those who have never heard of StarFox, Fox is a
fox (duh) wearing futuristic clothes and he has a cocky manner. He spends
most of his time shooting down bad guys with his fighter, but he also
ventures outside of the cockpit to battle evil, like in the game "StarFox
Adventures" for the Game Cube.
In Smash, Fox is a fast and nimble character. Except for his blaster,
all of Fox's moves were made by the creators of Smash. He didn't have
any original combat moves when the original Smash Bros. was released.
Fox is not especially powerful, but there is one thing that he is really
good at, and that is juggling.
Personal Stage: Sector
Z
Personal Symbol: The StarFox symbol (it's basically a picture of a fox
with wings)
Entrance: Fox hops out of his starfighter that comes in from the background
Character choosing: Fox crosses his arms, and turns his head to right
while giving you a dismissive "Huhm." What a cocky bastard.
Costumes
C up: Normal Fox with white boots and gloves, beige jacket and muddy
green pants.
C left: Fox with green jacket, white gloves, black pants and red boots.
This is the green team costume.
C down: Fox with purple jacket and boots, dark green pants and white
gloves. This is the blue team costume.
C right: Fox with orange jacket, brown pants, yellow boots and white
gloves. This is the red team costume, even though there isn't any red
on Fox at all.
Moves List
Weak Attack
Buttons: A continuously
Damage: 4%+4% then 1% each for the other hits.
KKT score: hard to test, but does KO under 300%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular for the punches, none for the multi hit.
Description: Fox will jab with his left fist, then his right. After
that he will stand on his right leg and unleash a barrage of kicks with
his left leg in Street Fighter Chung Li style (I probably spelled her
name wrong, but I'm not a Street Fighter fan anyways).
My Opinion: This weak combo won't kill in real combat, but it is not
completely useless. Fox can use his infinite combo to trap people against
a wall. Even though, there aren't many occasions in which you would
use this move.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Recovery Attack 1
Buttons: When lying back to the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox gets up, stands on his right foot, spins to the left
and kicks in front then behind himself with his left foot before getting
back to ready position. Fox is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: Not much to say about this really, since its your only attack
option when lying on the floor facing up. Can get Fox back on offense
if you manage to hit an opponent. Useful for clearing people who happen
to stand too close for their own good.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Recovery Attack 2
Buttons: When lying face down on the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox supports himself with his arms and sticks his right
foot backwards to clear enemies behind himself and then kick forward
with the right leg again before getting back on his feet. Fox is invincible
when he does this.
My Opinion: It's Fox's other recovery attack. It happen less often than
the first recovery attack since most of the time victims of hard hits
will lie face up.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 1
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage lower than 100%, press
A
Damage: 4%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox pulls himself up on the stage with his left hand and
kicks forward with both feet in one smooth motion. He will then flip
backwards to get back on his feet. Fox is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: Edge attacks can save lives, if you can time them. This
attack can get edge guarders out of the way and therefore save Fox from
danger. Use it only if no one's around or the edge guarder is standing
close to the edge. Experienced players will stand a bit away from the
edge if you (as any character) manages to hang on to it, so you need
to evaluate the situation before you use the edge attack.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 2
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage over 100%, press A
Damage: 4%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Slow
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium fast
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox slowly pulls himself up with both hands and then yells
and flips forward and hits extends his right leg as he completes the
flip, hitting anyone in front with his heel. After that he'll get back
on his feet. Fox is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: This is slower and has a shorter reach than the low damage
edge attack, but it's the only edge attack Fox has. Use the same guidelines
as above to use this move.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Taunt
Buttons: L when on the ground
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Fast
Description: Fox crosses his arms, and turns his head to right while
giving you a dismissive "Huhm." Almost the same as the character
choosing except Fox turns his head in a different direction
My Opinion: This taunt shows that Fox is a cocky guy, but it's a bit
too short, and the sound a bit too soft and the animation a bit too
unnoticeable for this taunt to be good.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Forward Kick
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A on the ground. You can tilt the control
stick slightly so that the kick angles a bit up or down.
Damage: 9%
KKT score: 178%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox kicks forward with his right leg, and that's about
it.
My Opinion: This move is pretty quick, but it's kind of useless since
it is very weak. Don't bother using this move.
Rating: 1.5 out of 5
Tail Sweep
Buttons: Tilt stick downward + A on the ground
Damage: 12%
KKT score: star finish at 105%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium Long
Flight Path: Straight up or Steep Diagonal
Description: Fox turns to his right once around and sweep anybody in
front of him at the ankle with his bushy tail while Fox is in a crouching
position.
My Opinion: This move surprisingly powerful for a strong attack and
can kill light characters at a little bit over 100%. The reach of this
move is also a bit longer than you think. This is one of the better
strong attacks in the game. Fox can use it to start juggles or use it
as a quick hit to kill a high damaged character.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Vertical Kick
Buttons: Tilt stick upward + A on the ground
Damage: 9%
KKT score: star finish at 125%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight up or close to it
Description: Fox does a vertical split as he kicks straight upwards
with his right foot.
My Opinion: This move is okay. Fox can use it to juggle people on the
ground or setup an air juggle. It's a bit weak though, and the lateral
reach is quite short. This move, however, is a lot easier to time than
Fox's up smash.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Running Kick
Buttons: A while running
Damage: 10%
KKT score: 171%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: During a run, Fox bends his right leg and slides on the
ground on his knee while his left leg extends forward to kick anyone
in front.
My Opinion: As just a running attack, this move is kind of crappy. It's
pretty weak, and the range seems to be a little shorter than other running
attacks. It is however an integral part of Fox's fighting style since
Fox can run very fast, so you can't go without using the running move.
At least it's better than DK or Luigi's running attacks.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 because it's an integral part of Fox's game.
Missile Drop Kick
Buttons: Smash sideways + A while on the ground.
Damage: 17%
KKT score: 71%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox yells flies forward with both feet in front to drop
kick anyone in front of him. He lands on his behind and then gets back
up. Fox actually moves forward during the attack.
My Opinion: This smash looks pretty good on paper. It has a good reach,
and the power is not lacking, and it isn't too slow either. However,
there is one annoying problem with this smash. The problem is that this
smash gives off partial hits, and those partial hits are very weak compared
to the full hit. You have to time the smash just right to get the full
hit. I'm an experienced Fox player, but even I can't get full hits more
than 50% of the time. Don't get me wrong. This is by no means a bad
move, it's just that it has a problem, like most attacks do.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Split Kick
Buttons: Smash down + A while on the ground
Damage: 14%
KKT score: 99%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Horizontal (with slight downward angle)
Description: Fox yells, does a front and back split with the left leg
forward and the right leg backwards to kick anyone near him. After the
hit phase, Fox gets up and turns once around to the right before going
into ready position.
My Opinion: This smash, unlike the forward smash, doesn't look too good
on paper. It barely manages to sneak into the power move category in
KKT and the reach is kind of short. However, there is one good thing
about this smash, and that is its launch path. The launch path is completely
horizontal and if the opponent has high damage, he/she will lose altitude
during the flight. It has one of the flatest (is that a word?) launch
path in the game. This means that this move probably won't kill anyone
in the middle of a big stage, but if Fox hits someone with this near
the edge, it would be quite difficult for the victim to jump back. Even
though the split kick is not well suited for close fights, Fox doesn't
have much of a choice. Every character only gets one down smash.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Flip Kick
Buttons: Smash up + A while on the ground
Damage: 16%
KKT score: Star finish at 61%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Not quite straight up, but a very steep vertical diagonal
for a full hit and regular for a partial hit.
Description: Fox shouts and does a back flip while sticking his right
foot out to kick anyone in front, above and even behind himself.
My Opinion: This is the most powerful smash in the flipping up smashes
(Pikachu and Kirby also have flipping up smashes.) In terms of power,
this kick is not much weaker than the Mario's brothers' whiplash headbutts,
which means this kick is quite strong. However, flip smashes always
give partial hits, and it's not all that easy to get a full hit with
this thing. For Fox's flip kick, it's easiest to get a full hit if the
opponent is in front of Fox. You can get a full hit on an opponent straight
above Fox but it's harder to time that hit. Anyone behind Fox will only
receive partial hits. Due to Fox's fast running speed and the arc of
the kick, you can actually run Fox right in front of an opponent and
flip kick them. This strategy is actually quite useful and works fairly
well because you don't have to worry about timing as the opponent is
already in the full-power hit zone of the attack. This move works best
of course if the opponent is a bit preoccupied, but it can be surprisingly
fast if you manage to do it well. If you can time this move correctly,
then it's quite an KO tool, but if you don't, Fox will be left open
for others to hit.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Judo Toss
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z + A) while on the ground, then push stick
forward, press A, press R, or wait for a few seconds.
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 134%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Fox's grab): Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox grabs the opponent's shirt (or face or chest, depending
on who Fox is facing), pulls the victim over to his right, and tosses
the person away with his arms.
My Opinion: This is one of the weakest throws in the game. Fox needs
to work on his arms. The throw is so weak. I have trouble killing Jigglypuff
with this. Don't even think about KOing DK. Of course, as Fox, you have
to throw, since Fox can run fast and grab fast, so he can use the run
and grab technique to throw people. Still, this is worse than most other
throws out there.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Sacrifice Throw / Circle Throw
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z+A) while on the ground, then push stick
backward
Damage: 15%
KKT score: 99%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Fox's grab): Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox grabs the opponent, then he will fall backwards, dragging
the opponent down with him. Fox will then stick his right foot on to
the victim's stomach (or face, for those won don't have a stomach) and
uses the momentum of the fall to launch the victim backwards.
My Opinion: Another Judo throw (I think) from Fox, and another weak
throw too. Nothing against Judo here. What I meant is that Fox needs
to touch up on his throwing skills. This throw barely sneaks into the
power move category in the KKT. It's a bit more powerful than the forward
throw, but still weaker than even the average back throw, and not even
close to power back throws from the likes of Ness and DK. Fox is stuck
with it, so uses whenever possible, but just don't expect too many KOs
with his throws.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Jump Kick
Buttons: A or R while in the air
Damage: 14%
KKT score: 114%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium Slow
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox sticks his left foot out in mid air to kick anyone
in front of him. His left arm is also extended forward. Looks like Fox
is practicing Kung Fu.
My Opinion: This kick is okay. The speed is average, the reach is a
bit short and the power is acceptable. Believe it or not, this is Fox's
most powerful air move for knocking people off the sides, which means
Fox has a bunch of other weaker hits for is other air attacks.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Corkscrew Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick forward in the air
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 135%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox extends his right leg straight forward and bends his
left leg at the knee. His body is parallel to the ground and he twists
to his right and rotates several times in the air.
My Opinion: This is even worse than the neutral attack. The reach is
a bit longer, but it is also significantly weaker. Don't expect to KO
anyone with this move. If Fox has to knock someone out while in the
air, use the neutral kick if you can.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Aerial Splits
Buttons: A or R + push stick backwards in the air
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 135%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Fox turns his head to the right and does a forward and
back split with the right leg extending back and the left leg extending
forward. Fox's body follows his head as he turns once around in mid
air to recover from the kick.
My Opinion: This move has pretty much the same stats as the forward
A kick, which means this kick also sucks. The only improvement over
the forward kick is that the aerial splits can hit both in front and
behind Fox at the same time. Still doesn't make this move much better
though.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Juggle Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick upwards in the air
Damage: 2% +13%
KKT score: star finish at 91%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight up
Description: Fox flips in mid air to invert himself (head towards the
ground, feet toward the sky). During the flip, Fox kicks twice upwards,
first with his left leg than with his right. The first hit deals little
damage but it stuns the target while the second hit propels the target
into the air.
My Opinion: There's no better name suited for this attack than the "Juggle
Kick," since this is probably the best juggling move in Smash Bros.
Some people call this Fox's best attack, and I am inclined to agree
with those people. This move is not only pretty quick and has a good
reach, it is also the most powerful juggling move in the game. Fox can
keep people in the air for a long time with this move. Because it is
pretty powerful, Fox can easily kill light characters with this move.
This move is also pretty easy to time, since even if you miss the first
hit, the second kick will still send the opponent up high. I use this
move whenever I can when I use Fox, and so does the Cpu Fox, who is
one of the most annoying cpu players in the game.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Drill Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick downwards in air
Damage: 2% times up to 7 hits
KKT score: none, no power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: None, no power
Description: Fox extends his left leg straight out at an slight angle
to the ground and bends his right leg at the knee. He will hold this
position and spins to the right several time around. Anyone caught by
the hit will be hit multiple times.
My Opinion: I don't know what Fox did, but the designers of Smash gave
him another crappy move. This drill kick has no power like most other
drills, but it can't even do much damage either. Maybe the people at
HAL got pissed off by Fox's cocky atitude. Anyways, this move can't
do much. Even if you get all hits in, the total is still a measly 14%.
The only use I can think of for this move is to buffer into a reflector
bounce (down+B) in an attempt to spike, but you gotta have a lot of
skill (Z-Cancelling in particular) to do that.
Rating: 2 ouf of 5
Blaster
Buttons: B. Tap B to fire off shots in succession.
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, no power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Range: Long (unlimited)
Flight Path: None
Description: Fox pulls out his trusty blaster with his right hand, and
presses the trigger. A purple laser beam with come out of the blaster,
flying forward with a lot of speed. Fox can fire shots off continuously.
When Fox puts the blaster away, he spins it in his hands to show off.
My Opinion: This move is great for annoying people. Fox can peg people
from really far away since the blaster has an unlimited range. The blaster
is also a great way to stop people from charging at Fox. Just keep pegging
them with the shots and they will be forced to jump out of the way.
Fox's blaster has the highest rate of fire for any projectile, so Fox
can rack up some damage by hitting people with this. Fox can also try
to make people lose their air jumps during recovery but stunning them
with the blaster.
Rating: 4 out of 5. Can cause quite a bit of annoyance if you keep pegging people
Fire Fox
Buttons: Push stick up + B, then move the control stick in the direction
you want Fox to move.
Damage: 16%
KKT score: star finish at 140%
Startup: Very Slow
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Slow (not until Fox gets hit or lands on the ground)
Reach: Long
Flight Path: Straight up
Description: When you press up + B, Fox will start charging up. If Fox
is charging in the air, he will fall very slowly. Then Fox will rocket
in the direction you pressed for a considerable distance. Any enemy
in his way will catch on fire and sent up into the air. Fox will pass
through all platforms during his flight and if he hits the ground or
a wall, the move will end and Fox will bounce off the surface.
My Opinion: The Fire Fox is not much of an attack move, since it doesn't
kill all that often. However, it is a decent recovery move that carries
Fox in any direction for a considerable distance. The initial priority
of this move is also very high, so it can pass through some weaker attempts
at edge guarding. Don't bother using this move to attack though, especially
near an edge because... I'll tell you later in the cpu tendencies section.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Reflector
Buttons: Push stick down + B. Hold B to keep the shield up.
Damage: 5% to people standing near him. Any projectile sent at Fox will
have its damage multiplies by 1.5.
KKT score: None%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Depends on how long the player holds the B button.
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Short
Flight Path: 45 degrees downwards
Description: When the player presses the appropriate buttons, Fox will
go into a defensive position and a blue hexagon shield will cover Fox's
body. Anyone near Fox at the time will get electricuted and sent away
at a downward angle. Opposing players can only be hit when at the instant
that the reflector is turned on, but projectiles can be reflected as
long as the thing is on. Any projectile thrown or fired at Fox at this
time will be sent flying back in the direction the projectiles came
from with a faster speed, more damage and more power in most cases.
If the owner gets KOed by the reflected projectile, Fox will get a KO.
Fox can also claim motion sensor bombs thrown at him as his own with
the reflector. The only projectiles I think that can't be reflected
is the bob-omb and the containers. Using the reflector in the air will
slow down Fox's falling speed and he will stop moving laterally. If
Fox uses the reflector in the air, it will turn off once Fox lands.
Fox's reflector can only reflect projectiles that do less then a certain
amount of damage. I estimate the amount at about 40 to 50%. If the projectile
does more damage than that, the reflector will break and Fox will be
stunned the same way if his regular shield breaks.
My Opinion: Fox is one of two characters who can reflect projectiles
fired at them (the other being Ness and his baseball bat). This move
is pretty useful, but a lot of times I keep forgetting to use this move
when something flies at Fox. This move is most useful against Samus
since sending a fully charged charge shot back will probably kill Samus
if it hits.
Because of the downward angle the reflector sends people, it can be
used to spike. I don't think this works against characters with good
recovery, like Kirby or Pikachu, but it will work on the likes of Link
and Captain Falcon. The reach of the shield is a bit short though, so
Fox will probably have to drill kick to buffer for the reflector, or
have impeccable timing. To be truly good at Fox, a player pretty much
have to master the use of this move.
Rating: 4 out of 5 if used properly. Otherwise it just becomes a novelty
move.
