Background Info
Ness is some obscure Nintendo character from a strange game called Earthbound. From what I know, Ness is
a normal kid who suddenly got psychic powers and decided to bash everything
in sight with his baseball bat. Wait, that's not quite true. He is supposed
to be a hero in the game and battle some evil to save the world or something.
Ness is a weird character in Smash. He looks weird, he jumps weird,
and his attacks are weird. Ness has a variety of physical and psychic
attacks that he can unleash on opponents. He is quite powerful, despite
being a light weight, but he is also slow for a light weight. Ness can
be very cheap if you know how to use him correctly or you can self destruct
many times if you don't know how to use him.
Ness is a secret character in Smash. To be able to use Ness, you need
to beat single player mode on normal difficulty and three lives without
continuing. After the game, Ness will challenge you to an one stock
fight on Dream Land. Beat him and you can use him. Ness can be a bit
tough for someone who's new to Smash, but you should be able to beat
him in one try. The person I suggest you use to complete this task is
DK, since he is hard to kill.
Personal Stage: None,
but you'll fight him for the first time on Dream Land.
Personal Symbol: A picture of Earth.
Entrance: Ness comes into the arena really fast and causes a small explosion
that turns himself black. Ness then shakes off the dust and gets into
ready position.
Character choosing: Ness looks to his right, then his left, then faces
the front and scratches his head with his right hand.
Costumes
C up: Original Ness with red cap and shoes, purple pants and purple
shirt with yellow stripes. This is the red team costume.
C left: Ness with green cap and shoes, orange pants and orange shirt
with yellow stripes. So damned bright! Hurts the eyes to look at him.
This is the green team costume.
C down: Ness with blue cap and shoes, dark pink pants and also pink
shirt with yellow stripes. Ness really loves his bright colours. This
is the blue team costume.
C right: Ness looks like a bee with yellow cap and shoes, black pants
and black shirt with yellow stripes. Buzzzzz...
Moves List
Weak Attack
Buttons: A, A, A
Damage: 2%+2%+4%
KKT score: over 300%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness jabs with his left, then with his right fist, then
kicks with his right foot.
My Opinion: This is weak combo can't really do anything. Don't bother
with it.
Rating: 1.5 out of 5
Recovery Attack 1
Buttons: When lying back to the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness supports himself on his right arm and sweeps all the
way around himself with both legs starting with his right side before
getting back up on his feet. Ness is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: Not much to say about this really, since its your only attack
option when lying on the floor facing up. Can get Ness back on offense
if you manage to hit an opponent. Useful for clearing people who happen
to stand too close for their own good.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Recovery Attack 2
Buttons: When lying face down on the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness gets back on his feet and swings his head all the
way around in a circle starting with his right side like a weapon to
clear people away. Ness is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: It's Ness' other recovery attack. It happen less often than
the first recovery attack since most of the time victims of hard hits
will lie face up.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 1
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage lower than 100%, press
A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness pulls himself up, turns to his right and delivers
a kick to the mid section with both legs before getting up. Ness is
invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: Edge attacks can save lives, if you can time them. This
attack can get edge guarders out of the way and therefore save Ness
from danger. Use it only if no one's around or the edge guarder is standing
close to the edge. Experienced players will stand a bit away from the
edge if you (as any character) manages to hang on to it, so you need
to evaluate the situation before you use the edge attack.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 2
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage over 100%, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Slow
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium slow
Reach: Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness slowly pulls himself back on to the stage, then delivers
a kick to the ankles with his right leg. Ness is invincible when he
does this.
My Opinion: This is worse than the low damage edge attack, but better
than nothing at all. Same guidelines as above.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Taunt
Buttons: L when on the ground
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Fast
Description: Ness turns to his right, nods his head and says "Okay"
in a weird voice.
My Opinion: This taunt is pretty good. It's annoying and obnoxious,
which are the qualities a taunt should have.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Sideway Kick
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A on the ground. You can tilt the control
stick slightly so that the kick angles a bit up or down.
Damage: 10%
KKT score: 151%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Very simple move. Ness picks up his fight foot and kicks
forward. He turns to his left when he does this.
My Opinion: This move is weak, and its range isn't all that long. Kinda
useless if you ask me.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Ankle Kick
Buttons: Tilt stick downward + A on the ground
Damage: 3%
KKT score: none, no power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Short
Flight Path: None
Description: Ness crouches and uses his left foot to poke at the opponent's
ankles.
My Opinion: This move is one of the weakest moves in the game. It doesn't
send people anywhere. However, this move is quite fast and you can trap
people against a wall with this move. Still pretty useless though.
Rating: 1.5 out of 5.
Two Hand Upward Punch
Buttons: Tilt stick upward + A on the ground
Damage: 7%
KKT score: star finish at over 300%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium fast
Reach: Medium short
Flight Path: Straight up or close to it
Description: Ness hops slightly upwards and raises both fists up to
punch the opponent.
My Opinion: This move is also very weak. It does have a use, and that
is to set up an up smash or an air juggle. This move won't get Ness
any kills, but he can start a combo with it.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Running Shove
Buttons: A while running
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 121%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium Slow
Reach: Medium Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness brakes and puts both hands forward to shove opponents
away. I thought it was a chop but when I looked closely I saw that Ness
hits with his palms.
My Opinion: This is an okay running attack. The power is okay, and so
is the speed. Running attacks have their uses.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Homerun Bat
Buttons: Smash sideways + A while on the ground.
Damage: 18%
KKT score: 81%
Startup: Medium
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness gets out his trusty homerun bat and swings the bat
with a right-handed swing (right to left) while yelling. The sound of
this bat connecting is the same as the homerun bat item smash. This
move can be used to reflect projectiles. The reflected projectile will
fly faster, deal more damage and have more power. Unlike Fox, whose
reflector has a strength limit, Ness' bat can reflect projectiles of
any power. This means even if a charge shot is dealing 100% damage in
one hit, Ness can still reflect it.
My Opinion: This is not that great of a smash. The speed is a bit slow,
and the reach is short considering that Ness is using a weapon. This
smash is a bit hard to time correctly to hit people, and even harder
to time for projectiles. If you wanna have some fun with reflecting,
then use this move to experiment. Not that great of a combat move. Besides,
Ness has other KO moves that are more powerful and eaiser to use.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Horizontal Yo-Yo/Walk the Dog Yo-Yo
Buttons: Smash down + A while on the ground
Damage: 19%
KKT score: 79%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Long
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness gets out his yo-yo and swings it backwards with his
right hand. The yo-yo then retracts back and goes in front of Ness,
reaching its maximum distance, than retreats back to Ness. Ness shouts
in the process.
My Opinion: This is a pretty good smash attack. It isn't too slow and
has pretty good power. The most noticeable thing about this yo-yo smash
is its reach. The yo-yo can extend a long way in front and behind Ness.
The reach of this move makes it a good edge guarding move and also it
can detonate motion sensor bombs without hurting Ness himself. Oh yeah,
it's more powerful and does more damage than Ness' forward smash. This
is the main smash to use if you use Ness.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Vertical Yo-Yo / Around the World Yo-Yo
Buttons: Smash up + A while on the ground
Damage: 17%
KKT score: star finish at 97%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium Long
Flight Path: Steep Diagonal, Vertical or Regular
Description: Ness swings his yo-yo in an arc that starts out in front
of himself and ends up behind himself. Depends on what part of the attack
connected, the victim will fly in one of many directions.
My Opinion: This is smash is pretty fast, and the reach is pretty good.
It's useful for start an air juggle or just juggling people while Ness
is on the ground. The only complain I have about this move is that the
power is a bit weak compared to the likes of Mario or Fox or DK's up
smashes. This move does have a pretty big hit zone, and hits in front,
above and behind Ness.
Rating: 4 out of 5
PK Throw
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z + A) while on the ground, then push stick
forward, press A, press R, or wait for a few seconds.
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 68%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Ness' grab): Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness grabs the opponent with both hands, then uses his
psychokinetic powers (PK) to rotate the victim in front of him before
releasing and sending the enemy far away.
My Opinion: This is one of the reasons why Ness can be so cheap, and
why the baseball bat smash isn't all that useful. Take a look at this
throw, people. It's very powerful as in being the most powerful forward
throw in the game, it's quick and of course it gets Ness lots of kills.
If you use Ness, then one of the things you'll be doing very often is
chucking people with Ness' funny looking throw. If the victim happens
to survive, jump out and give the person a taste of Ness' foot.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Backward PK Throw
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z+A) while on the ground, then push stick
backward
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 66%. This throw is actually identical to Ness' forward throw
except for the direction. They both send the opponent the same distance
from Ness. However, because KKT was tested on an edge, the back throw
allows Ness to stand closer to the edge, therefore giving this throw
a slightly lower score than the forward throw.
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Ness' grab): Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: This is the same as the forward throw, except this time
Ness rotates the person behind him and then throws the enemy away.
My Opinion: Another very powerful throw that Ness can use to pulverize
his enemies with. Ness has the most powerful set of throws in the game.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Aerial Semi-Split Kick
Buttons: A or R while in the air
Damage: 14%
KKT score: 103%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium Slow
Reach: Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness does his best to do a split kick in the air, but doesn't
quite get there. His legs are at more of a 90 degree angle than a 180
degree angle.
My Opinion: This kick is an okay attack. Power and speed are pretty
good, but the reach is a bit short. This move does hit on both left
and right and is a bit more powerful than Ness' forward air attack,
so if Ness wants to knock someone out in front of him, this move would
be a better choice.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Aerial Shove
Buttons: A or R + push stick forward in the air
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 121%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: This is basically the same as Ness' running shove, but
it happens in the air. He somersaults forwards after the move before
going back to ready position.
My Opinion: This move is a bit weak for an aerial move. The reach isn't
all that great either. For better results, Ness should probably use
his neutral kick in the air. You can't really help not use this move
when someone is in front of Ness though.
Rating: 3 out of 5.
Backward Drop Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick backwards in the air
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 92%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Ness kicks both feet backwards and then goes into a forward
somersault before he can use another move.
My Opinion: This move is pretty good air combat move. It is pretty fast,
recovery isn't long, reach is not bad and the power is good too. Use
it when someone is behind Ness.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Aerial Headbutt
Buttons: A or R + push stick upwards in the air
Damage: 15%
KKT score: star finish at 101%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight up
Description: Ness tilts his head back and headbutts upwards in the air.
He has to somersault forward before he can do another move.
My Opinion: This is a good juggling move. It is pretty fast and can
send victims high into the air. With this move, Ness is a pretty good
juggler in the air. This move will get Ness a fair number of KOs.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Step Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick downwards in air
Damage: 15%
KKT score: star finish at 119% if victim is on the ground. This move
is capable of spiking and killing at very low %.
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight down or very close to straight down when opponent
is in the air and straight up if opponent is on the ground.
Description: Ness will put his right foot down on to whoever is below
him and squishes them. Heh heh heh heh.
My Opinion: This is the most lethal send down move in the game of Smash.
It can probably kill at 20% damage. This move is fast, and Ness doesn't
lose much altitude due to his move. With Ness' good comeback ability,
the step kick makes Ness the best spiker in the whole game. This move
is powerful enough that it is not uncommon for it to star finish people.
You can also trap people with the infamous "Step Kick Combo,"
as explained here.
Rating: 5 ouf of 5. Best send down move in the game. Some moves come
close but still can't beat the good old step kick.
PK Fire
Buttons: Press B
Damage: initial hit is 4%, then up to seven more 3% hits for a maximum
total of 25%.
KKT score: over 300%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Depends if the fire hits someone.
Recovery: Slow
Range: Short (one third way across Kirby's stage)
Flight Path: Staight up or very close to it (noticeable only at very
high damages)
Description: Ness will yell "PK Fire!" and swing both of his
arms forward to throw out a little projectile that looks like a lightning
bolt. If done on the ground, the lightning bolt flys staight horizontally.
If Ness is in the air doing this move, the bolt will fly diagonally
downwards. The range of the bolt is short and it will disappear in smoke
when it runs out of range, hits a barrier or hits a shield. If the bolt
hits an unshield player, item or projectile, it will turn into a column
of fire that can trap enemies inside and burn them several times. The
fire will slowly get smaller and disappear.
My Opinion: This move won't get Ness any kills, but it can be used to
stun opponents so Ness can grab or smash them away. The PK Fire can
get very annoying for your opponents if they keep getting hit and trapped
by it. Besides as a damage raising tool, Ness can also use the fire
to mess up people's comebacks. The PK fire can make people lose altitude
by dragging them downwards.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
PK Thunder and Thunder Ram/PK Cannonball
Buttons: Push stick up + B. Use the control stick to steer the thunder.
To perform the cannonball, hit Ness himself with the thunder.
Damage: 6% for the thunder, 30% for the cannonball
KKT score: none for the thunder itself since it's so weak. 30% for the
cannonball.
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Depends on how fast the thunder disintegrates or if Ness gets
hit.
Recovery: Slow (well, not until Ness lands on something or gets hit,
or the thunder disappears if Ness is on the ground)
Range: Long for the thunder. Reach is also long for the cannonball.
Flight Path: Normal for the cannonball. Straight up for the thunder.
Description: Ness will yell "PK Thunder!" and a electric thunder
bolt will come out of his head. Ness will be surrounded by electricity
as he concentrates to move the thunder with his mind. The thunder itself
will cause only a little bit of damage and stun to an opponent. The
thunder can hit up to two opponents since the bolt can just hit with
the head and the tail can keep going. Ness can perform the cannonball
by driving the thunder into himself. In this case, Ness will fly pretty
far at a rapid speed and surrounded by high voltage. Anyone hit be Ness
at this time will fly very very far. Ness will only stop concentrating
if the bolt disappears or someone hits him.
My Opinion: Believe it or not, this is actually Ness' recovery move.
You drive the bolt into Ness and Ness will fly pretty far. The bolt
itself is weak and doesn't have many uses, but using it to help Ness
recover is a great move. The cannonball move carries Ness pretty far
in any direction you want (according to the angle of the thunder when
it hits Ness) and Ness is practically invincible during the flight.
Anyone who happens to be in the way will fly away at a high speed. The
thunder itself can be useful for attacking from a distance, or you can
use it to steal people's jumps as they try to come back on to the stage.
The cannonball is quite hard to use, so you better practice a lot to
get the hang of it. Unlike other characters, it is not recommended for
Ness to aim for the edge because his recovery attack is extremely powerful
and has very high priority, and also aiming for the edge will bounce
Ness off the edge and make him fall into oblivion. When you do this
move, make sure that there's no unfriendly people around since they
will get a free hit during Ness' concentration phase.
Rating: 4 out of 5
PK Shield
Buttons: Push stick down + B. Hold B to keep the shield up.
Damage: None
KKT score: None
Startup: Medium
Duration: Depends on how long you hold down the B button.
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: None
Flight Path: None
Description: Ness will crouch down and a green blob will come out of
his head and cover most of his body. If an energy projectile hits Ness,
the damage the attack did will by deducted from Ness' total damage %,
giving Ness less damage. Only energy projectiles such as blaster shots,
fireballs, or thunder jolts can be absorbed. Solid items like baseball
bats, boomerangs or bomb-ombs will still do damage on Ness even if the
shield is on.
My Opinion: This is the only built in damage recovery in the game. If
Ness is facing off people with energy projectiles, there's a chance
that Ness can recover some health. You have to always be ready to use
this move, or else the projectile will hit Ness before he can put up
his shield.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
