Clobbering Items
Clobbering items is another big group of items you can find while playing Smash. A character can pick up one of these items and use it to attack another opponent by performing his/her A attacks on the ground or he/she can chuck the item to deal damage (applies to most clobbering items but not all). Some clobbering items are more powerful than others, but most clobbering items are pretty good though, and some of these items can potentially turn the tide of battle to your favour. Every characters has a different animation for using a clobbering item, but they all do the same damage and has the same power with the same item. Unlike most other items, most clobbering item will decrease in power and damage if you use the same attack over and over again.
Beam Sword
Description: You know the light sabres from Star Wars. The beam sword
looks very similar to that and it has a pink blade. Press A if you want
to pick it up.
Function: Since it's a sword, you should use it to attack people. The
beam sword replaces your character's weak attack, sideways strong attack,
sideways smash attack and your running attack. You can also throw the
beam sword like you would throw a throwing item.
Attack No. 1: Beam Sword Weak Attack
Buttons: A while on the ground, holding the sword
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 130%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Medium Long
Attack Description: The character will hold the sword in one hand and
swing the sword forward quickly. Depending on what character you use,
the swing may be in a vertical or horizontal arc.
Attack No. 2:
Beam Sword Strong Attack
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the sword
Damage: 18%
KKT score: 80%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Long
Attack Description: The character takes a harder single handed swing
with the sword. This is close in strength to most smash attacks and
is quite powerful.
Attack No. 3:
Beam Sword Smash Attack
Buttons: Tap stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the sword
Damage: 25%
KKT score: 45%
Startup: Medium
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium Slow
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Long
Attack Description: The character will hold the sword with both hands
(Samus will still hold it in one hand since she only has one hand) and
swing it hard, producing a very powerful blow. Some characters produce
a big vertical arc that can hit people above and some character produce
a horizontal arc that can hit people behind them.
Attack No. 4:
Beam Sword Running Attack
Buttons: Press A while running and holding the sword
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 93%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Long
Attack Description: The character will either thrust the sword forward
or swing it in a slight arc while running.
Attack No. 5:
Beam Sword Throw
Buttons: Press R to throw the sword. Tap or tilt the stick to control
the force and direction of the throw.
Damage: 20%
KKT score: 58%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Range: Long
Attack Description: The character will throw the sword in any direction
you want him/her to. The beam sword will rotate in mid air and it can
fly pretty far.
My Opinion:
The beam sword is a pretty good weapon to have because it improves all
the moves it replaces on your character. The beam sword smash is very
powerful but it is a bit slow, so set up for it with the weak and strong
attacks. The running attack for the beam sword is also good since it
has a very long reach. I find that when I can't seem to get a hit with
any other move, I can still hit people with the beam sword running attack.
The beam sword is also a pretty good throwing item since it's big, flies
pretty fast and pretty far, and deals a lot damage and is quite powerful.
Usually you would want to keep a beam sword since it is a pretty good
item to have, but when you want to attack someone far away, throwing
the sword is not a bad idea.

Hammer
Description: This is the same hammer used by Mario during the old days
when he battled DK. It has a big black cylindrical piece of metal on
its wooden handle. Press A to pick it up and use it. The hammer is different
from all other clobbering items. Read the attack description for details.
Function: The hammer is used to kill people. It is one of the most devastating
weapons in Smash Bros.
Attack No. 1: Hammer Swing
Buttons: No need to press any buttons.
Damage: 30%
Flight Path: Close to straight up, but not quite
Reach: Long
Attack Description: After picking up the hammer, your character will
hold the hammer in both hands and start swinging it wildly. You will
hear the classic hammer music from the old Mario games. During the hammer
craze, your character will not be able to perform any other attacks
and has only one jump. Anybody who gets hit by the hammer will be launched
skywards. The hammer will hit anyone in front, above and behind the
character holding it. Because the hammer moves so fast, it will cancel
most attacks that comes at the character holding it. The hammer craze
will stop after 12 seconds and it will disappear, and your character
will return to normal. You can see when the hammer is about to run out.
It will start flashing near the end of its usage. Contrary to popular
believe, your character can still grab the edge while holding a hammer.
My Opinion:
There is no doubt that the hammer is probably the most fearsome weapon
in Smash Bros. No character except Yoshi can take more than 3 hits from
the hammer and survive. Yoshi can be hit more than three times because
of his momentum cancelling second jump. If you see a hammer, go and
grab it because you definitely don't want an opponent to get to it first.
When you have the hammer, go and chase after your opponents. They will
try and run away from you, but if you are persistant enough, or your
opponents are not very good, you should be able to hit someone. During
the time of the hammer craze, avoid jumping unless you absolutely have
to because your underside is not protected while you are holding the
hammer.
Here are some strategies in case that an opponent gets hold of the hammer
first. If you are Kirby, you can jump above the hammer person and use
stone (down+B). The stone will withstand one hammer hit and will go
through the hammer and hit the person wielding it. If you are either
Samus or Link, you can use your long reach grabs and try to grab the
hammer person, but I don't really recommend doing that because the hammer
person can jump out of the way. If you just died or has a star, go after
the hammer person. Hit the person off the edge and he/she can't come
back since he/she doesn't have any air jumps while using the hammer.
If you have an item in your hand, chuck it at the hammer person. The
best thing to throw here is probably a bob-omb. If you have a long range
projectile (blaster, ray gun, charge shot etc.), shoot at the hammer
person if he/she is far away. Start running if the person get close.
If you happen to be underneath the hammer person and your character
has a good juggle move, you can attempt to juggle the hammer person
since he/she can't protect his/her underside, but you better be very
good at juggling since missing a juggle may mean losing a life. When
jumping away from the hammer person, avoid using your third jump unless
you absolutely have to do so. If the hammer person gets close to you,
use your shield, which can take two to three hits without breaking.
If you can, try to hang on an edge where the hammer has trouble hitting
you. Hammers are very dangerous weapons, but with my advice and a bit
of luck, your character might survive.
Rating: 5 out of 5. This is the easiest way to kill all your competitors.
Fan
Description: This is a giant paper fan that is mostly white but has
a red grip. Press A to pick up the fan.
Function: You use the fan to perform quick attacks on people or use
it to break their shields. The fan replaces your character's weak attack,
sideways strong attack, sideways smash attack and your running attack.
You can also throw the fan like you would throw a throwing item.
Attack No. 1: Fan Weak Attack
Buttons: A while on the ground, holding the fan
Damage: 2%
KKT score: None, can't kill out right.
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: None
Reach: Medium
Attack Description: The character will hold the fan in one hand and
swing the fan forward very quickly. The speed is almost as fast as the
infinite combos of some characters. The fan hits will draw the victim
closer and closer to the person holding fan.
Attack No. 2:
Fan Strong Attack
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the fan
Damage: 4%
KKT score: None, no power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: None
Reach: Medium Long
Attack Description: The character takes a harder single handed swing
with the fan. This is slightly slower than the weak attack but is still
quite fast. Like the weak attack, the hit will draw the victim closer
to the wielder of the fan.
Attack No. 3:
Fan Smash Attack
Buttons: Tap stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the fan
Damage: 8%
KKT score: None, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Flight Path: Regular but backwards
Reach: Long
Attack Description: The character will hold the fan with both hands
(Samus will still hold it in one hand since she only has one hand) and
swing it hard. The victim of the hit will be sent flying behind the
wielder of the fan. A fan smash will break most shields in one hit.
Attack No. 4:
Fan Running Attack
Buttons: Press A while running and holding the fan
Damage: 8%
KKT score: None, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Flight Path: Regular Backwards
Reach: Long
Attack Description: The character will either thrust the fan forward
or swing it in a slight arc while running. The effects are the same
as the smash attack but this attack usually won't be able to break a
full shield in one hit.
Attack No. 5:
Fan Toss
Buttons: Press R to throw the fan. Tap or tilt the stick to control
the force and direction of the throw.
Damage: 9%
KKT score: star finish at 124%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Straight up
Range: Medium Short
Attack Description: The character will toss the fan in any direction
you want him/her to. The fan will rotate in mid air but it doesn't fly
very far.
My Opinion:
The fan is kind of useless since it actually weakens the attacks it
replaces. The only two characters I could think of that could use the
fan to do some good are Jigglypuff and Luigi, who can use the fan to
draw an opponent into the reach of their special power moves (rest and
fire punch, respectively). Even though the fan is fast, you won't be
able to do much damage since each hit only hurts a little. The only
cool use of the fan is to break the opponent's shield, but your opponents
might not bother to block since the fan does very little damage. Add
the fact that the fan is crappy for throwing, and you know that the
fan sucks. Don't bother picking it up unless you are really bored and
want to annoy your opponents.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Home Run Bat
Description: It's a wooden baseball bat. Nothing special about its looks.
Press A to pick up the bat.
Function: You can hit people with the bat or throw it at an opponent.
The bat replaces your character's weak attack, sideways strong attack,
sideways smash attack and your running attack. If you do it right, the
homerun bat can be the most powerful attack in the game.
Attack No. 1: Home Run Bat Weak Attack
Buttons: A while on the ground, holding the bat
Damage: 7%
KKT score: 214%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Medium
Attack Description: The character will hold the bat in one hand and
swing the bat forward quickly. Different characters will swing the bat
differently.
Attack No. 2:
Home Run Bat Strong Attack
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the bat
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 128%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Flight Path: None
Reach: Medium Long
Attack Description: The character takes a harder single handed swing
with the bat.
Attack No. 3: Home
Run Bat Smash Attack
Buttons: Tap stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the bat
Damage: 10%
KKT score: 0%. This is not a typo.
Startup: Slow
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium Slow
Flight Path: 45 degrees
Reach: Medium Long
Attack Description: The character will hold the bat with both hands
(Samus will still hold it in one hand since she only has one hand) and
the bat will start glowing. The character will then swing the bat forward
with tremendous force. Anyone who gets hit by the smash attack will
be killed instantly unless another hit intercepts the person during
the flight or if the victim bounces twice or more off walls. This is
why this weapon is called a Home Run Bat; it's because it can home run
your enemies out of the stage. You know you hit someone with the smash
when you hear a very sharp shrill.
Attack No. 4:
Home Run Bat Running Attack
Buttons: Press A while running and holding the bat
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 93%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Long
Attack Description: The character will either thrust the bat forward
or swing it in a slight arc while running.
Attack No. 5:
Home Run Bat Throw
Buttons: Press R to throw the bat. Tap or tilt the stick to control
the force and direction of the throw.
Damage: 24%
KKT score: 42%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Range: Long
Attack Description: The character will toss the bat in any direction
you want him/her to. The bat will rotate in mid air it can fly pretty
far.
My Opinion:
Some people think the bat is the best item in Smash because of its ability
to kill people instantly with the home run smash. Personally, I think
the hammer is much more dangerous since the home run smash is pretty
slow, so most of the time your opponent will hit you first, block, or
dodge the attack. The best chances to hit home runs is when a bunch
of people is fighting with each other. Slowly sneak beside them and
home run them when they are still occupied with each other. The bat's
other ground attacks aren't that good, so it's not as good a combat
weapon as the beam sword. The bat, like the beam sword, is also a great
weapon for chucking at people. It does a lot of damage, is very powerful,
and flies fast and far. If it doesn't look like you are going to be
able to home run anybody, chuck the bat to deal a heavy blow to an opponent.

Star Rod
Description: I believe this item came from the Kirby games. It is a
white rod with swirly red pattern that make it look like a candy cane
and it has a yellow star on its tip. Press A to pick up the star rod.
Function: The rod functions like a clobbering item in that you can hit
people with it or throw it at an opponent. The rod replaces your character's
weak attack, sideways strong attack, sideways smash attack and your
running attack. The star rod also qualifies as a distance attack item
because it contains twenty stars that can be launched if the character
holding it performs the strong or smash attack.
Attack No. 1: Star Rod Weak Attack
Buttons: A while on the ground, holding the rod
Damage: 10%
KKT score: 156%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Medium
Attack Description: The character will hold the rod in one hand and
swing the rod forward quickly. Different characters will swing the bat
differently. The star rod will sparkle and glow during the attack
Attack No. 2:
Star Rod Strong Attack
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the rod
Damage: 15% + 12% for the star
KKT score: 100% for just the 15% physical blow
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Medium Long for the physical blow. Range for the star is medium.
Attack Description: The character takes a harder single handed swing
with the rod. A star will fly out of the tip of the rod and fly forwards.
It's possible to land both hits, but the star tends to hit after the
physical blow, making the victim's flight a bit shorter than it would
have been with the physical blow.
Attack No. 3: Star
Rod Smash Attack
Buttons: Tap stick sideways + A while on the ground, holding the rod
Damage: 22% + 12% for the star
KKT score: 46% if the physical blow hits after the star hits.
Startup: Medium
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Long for the physical blow. The range of the star is medium long.
Attack Description: The character will hold the rod with both hands
(Samus will still hold it in one hand since she only has one hand) and
swings the rod forward with a lot of force, A star will appear from
the tip of the rod and fly forward. This star from the smash flies a
bit further than the star from the strong attack. It's quite common
to get both hits to connect when doing this smash.
Attack No. 4:
Star Rod Running Attack
Buttons: Press A while running and holding the rod
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 93%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Reach: Long
Attack Description: The character will either thrust the rod forward
or swing it in a slight arc while running.
Attack No. 5:
Star Rod Throw
Buttons: Press R to throw the rod. Tap or tilt the stick to control
the force and direction of the throw.
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 108%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Horizontal with downward angle
Range: Long
Attack Description: The character will toss the rod in any direction
you want him/her to. The rod will rotate in mid air it can fly pretty
far. Unlike most other projectiles, the star rod sends people downwards.
My Opinion:
A lot of people don't like the star rod, probably since it is not as
good as clobbering item as the beam sword and it's not quite as good
as a distance attack item as a ray gun. While the above points are true,
the star rod is still a pretty good item that can make your character's
attack more powerful. The star rod smash is the most damaging smash
attack in the game and is close in power to the beam sword smash. The
projectiles are also a nice extra to have, especially if you are using
a character without his own projectiles. The star rod is also a pretty
good throwing item, particularly if the opponent is trying to come back
to the stage or is near the edge. The downward launch angle of a flying
star rod can usually kill people near the edge since it's quite difficult
to come back from a hit like that.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Distance Attack Items
These items are used to attack people from a distance. The star rod qualifies as an item in this category. There are two more items in the category that I will introduce to you now. These items are pretty useful and cpus seems to be very good at using these two items.
Fire Flower
Description: It is a red circular flower with green stalk and leaves.
Press A to pick up the flower.
Function: It's called the fire flower, so it must have something to
do with fire. That assumption is correct. You use the fire flower to
burn people or you can chuck it at an opponent. While holding a fire
flower, your character will be unable to use his weak attack, sideway
strong attack and smash attack, and aerial neutral and forward attack.
Attack No. 1:
Fire Flower Breath
Buttons: Press A while holding the fire flower. Hold A to continue to
sprout flames.
Damage: 3% per blast
KKT score: None, no power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: None
Range: Short
Attack Description: The character will hold the fire flower in front
of his/her mouth and star blowing air into the flower. The flower will
then produce a sprout of flames in the direction of the breaths. Anyone
caught by the fire will be burned and trapped inside until the fire
pushes the person out of its range. The fire flower contains 59 blasts
that does 3% damage each before it runs out.
Attack No. 2:
Fire Flower Toss
Buttons: Press R to throw the flower. Tap or tilt the stick to control
the force and direction of the throw.
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 119% with the more common 11% hit
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Range: Medium Long
Attack Description: The character will toss the flower in any direction
you want him/her to. Anybody hit by the flower will be set on fire and
will be sen flying.
My Opinion:
The fire flower can be very useful in some situations, particularly
if you trap an opponent between you and a wall. Use the fire flower
to bring the opponent's damage way up and then kill the person with
a power hit. In most combat situations though, the fire flower isn't
that useful since the range of the flames is a bit short. If you manage
to get beside someone, you can burn them a bit but the flame will eventually
push the person out of range. Don't let a cpu player get a hold of a
fire flower because cpus seems to be able to use the flower very well.
After you use up the flower, throw it at an opponent. Even though the
flower is not a particularly good for throwing, it doesn't hurt to chuck
it if you used it all up.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
Ray Gun
Description: The ray gun is a futuristic looking laser pistol thingy.
Function: Since the ray gun is a gun, obviously you use it to shoot
people. You can also chuck the ray gun at an enemy. While holding a
ray gun, your character will be unable to use his weak attack, sideway
strong attack and smash attack, and aerial neutral and forward attack.
Attack No. 1:
Ray Gun Blast
Buttons: Press A while holding the gun. Hold A to continue to sprout
flames.
Damage: 10% per blast
KKT score: Over 300%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Steep diagonal, but you won't notice it unless the target
has very high damage
Range: Very Long (Across the whole stage)
Attack Description: The character will hold the ray gun in one hand
and presses the trigger. A green ray will come out of muzzle and fly
forward with tremendous speed. Any opponents who gets hit will be eletricuted
and fly slightly upwards. The ray gun can fire a maximum of 16 shots
before it runs out. The shots will decrease in damage if you shoot over
and over with the gun.
Attack No. 2:
Ray Gun Toss
Buttons: Press R to throw the gun. Tap or tilt the stick to control
the force and direction of the throw.
Damage: 15%
KKT score: 87%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Flight Path: Regular
Range: Long
Attack Description: The character will toss the gun in any direction
you want him/her to. The gun will rotate in mid air and can fly pretty
far.
My Opinion:
The general strategy when you get a ray gun is to put some distance
between you and your opponents, and then turn towards your opponents
and start pegging them from a distance. The ray gun is pretty cheap
since each blast sets the target up perfectly for the next blast. After
using up all the ammo, chuck the ray gun, which is a decent throwing
weapon, towards an opponent to cause extra damage. You can also use
the ray gun up close since its rate of fire is pretty fast, but it's
safer to shoot people from far away. Don't ever let a cpu get a ray
gun because cpus are very annoying when they get this item. They can
shoot very well and get you several times before you can escape.

Special Items
I'll list the last three items in this category. Two of the items are used to replenish your character's health during battle. The last item is truely special in the sense that it is the only item that can do what it does. Read on to find out more.
Maxim Tomato
Description: It's a big tomato with the letter "M" on it.
Press A to pick it up.
Function: A Maxim Tomato can be used to take away 100% of your damage
percentage during battle, therefore healing your character. During healing,
your character will glow and sparkle and your damage percentage at the
bottom of the screen will decrease very quickly. The item takes effect
as soon as you pick it up. If you are hit during the healing process,
the damage done by the hit will be subtracted from the amount that the
tomato can heal and the distance your character flies depends on what
damage your character was at when the attack came.
My Opinion: This item could be a life saver if it comes at a convienient
moment. Even if you don't really need it, pick it up anyways unless
you have a team mate who needs it more than you, because you don't want
an opponent to get this healing item.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Heart Container
Description: It's a giant pink heart with a silver border. Unlike other
items, when a heart appears, it will float slowly upwards for some distance
then slowly float back down. Press A to pick it up.
Function: The Heart Container is like the Maxim Tomato, but it can heal
all your damages. The item takes effect as soon as you pick it up. During
healing, your character will glow and sparkle and your damage percentage
at the bottom of the screen will decrease very quickly. If you are hit
during the healing process, the distance your character flies depends
on what damage your character was at when the attack came.
My Opinion: It's about the same as the tomato but even better. The heart
is probably the rarest item of all so be sure to be the first one to
snatch it. Use the same strategy for the tomato.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Starman
Description: It's a star with two eyes that bounces around on the stage.
This thing is from the Mario Brothers games. Unlike other items, you
just have to come in contact of it to get its effect and you don't have
to drop the item you already have to pick it up. It won't disappear
in a puff of smoke like other items. Instead, it will bounce around
on the stage until it bounces off into a pit if nobody picks it up.
Function: When you touch the star, you character will glow and sparkle,
a funny music will come on and your character will be invincible for
about 10 seconds.
My Opinion: What's there to say. This thing makes your character INVINCIBLE!!!
Albeit for a short while. When a star appears, get to it as quickly
as possible and make sure no one else gets it before you. When you get
is effect, go and lay the smackdown on your opponents, since they can't
fight back. This is one of the best items in the game.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Hopefully that this 3 page guide helped you understand more about the items that appear in Smash. Don't be afraid to be an item hog since it's much easier to win that way. Good luck and have fun playing Smash.
