Background Info
Kirby is a friendly little alien from a distant star. As far as I know,
Kirby likes to eat stuff, and has a bunch of strange abilities that
help him battle his enemies. Kirby has his own series of games where
he battles an evil penguin and other baddies to accomplish some goal...
I don't really know, since I never play any Kirby games.
In Smash, Kirby is probably one of the best fighters available. He has
very fast power moves and with his multiple air jumps, Kirby is perfect
for both beginners and experts alike. Kirby is also... umm... what's
the word... oh yeah, cheap. He can combo others endlessly and then whack
them off the stage very quickly. Kirby is an offensive minded character.
If you don't attack with Kirby, then you are missing the point of being
Kirby.
Personal Stage: Dream
Land
Personal Symbol: A star
Entrance: Kirby drops from the sky, causing an explosion on the ground,
and gets into ready stance.
Character choosing: Kirby spins around to the left really really fast
for several rounds before facing the front and posing with one leg tip
toeing on the ground.
Costumes
C up: Normal pink Kirby with red feet.
C left: Red Kirby with brown feet. This is the red team costume.
C down: Light blue Kirby with dark blue feet. This is the blue team
costume.
C right: Yellow Kirby with orange feet.
Green team costume (only available in team battles): Light green Kirby
with darker green feet.
Moves List
Weak Attack
Buttons: A continuously
Damage: 3%+4% then 1% each for the other hits.
KKT score: over 300%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: None really
Description: Kirby jabs with his left "hand" (Well, technically
it's not a hand since there aren't any fingers. It's more of a stub)
and then jabs with his right. After that, Kirby will unleash a flurry
of punches with his right hand.
My Opinion: This weak combo won't kill, but it is not completely useless.
Kirby can use his infinite combo to trap people against a wall. Kirby
has the easiest infinite combo because there are only two normal hits
before the combo.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Recovery Attack 1
Buttons: When lying back to the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby gets up, stands on his left foot, spins to the right
and sweeps behind and then in front of himself with his right foot before
getting back to ready position. Kirby is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: Not much to say about this really, since its your only attack
option when lying on the floor facing up. Can get Kirby back on offense
if you manage to hit an opponent. Useful for clearing people who happen
to stand too close for their own good.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Recovery Attack 2
Buttons: When lying face down on the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby flips forward with his legs extended to kick anyone
behind and in front of him before getting back on his feet. Kirby is
invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: It's Kirby's other recovery attack. It happen less often
than the first recovery attack since most of the time victims of hard
hits will lie face up.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 1
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage lower than 100%, press
A
Damage: 4%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby flips himself on to the stage with legs extended
to kick anyone who is too close for his/her own good, and then flips
backwards once to get into ready position. Kirby is invincible when
he does this.
My Opinion: Edge attacks can save lives, if you can time them. This
attack can get edge guarders out of the way and therefore save Kirby
from danger. Use it only if no one's around or the edge guarder is standing
close to the edge. Experienced players will stand a bit away from the
edge if you (as any character) manages to hang on to it, so you need
to evaluate the situation before you use the edge attack.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 2
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage over 100%, press A
Damage: 4%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Slow
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium fast
Reach: Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby pulls himself slowly up on the stage, then lunges
forward to tackle anyone in front, and then he pulls himself back and
goes into ready position. Kirby is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: This is a weird edge attack because the reach is pretty
long. This attack will hit people standing a bit away from the edge
but sometimes misses people standing right on the edge. Use the same
guidelines as above to use this move.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Taunt
Buttons: L when on the ground
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Fast
Description: Kirby turns to his right side, tip toes, waves his arms
and says "Hiiii." in a weird voice. This taunt will make Kirby
lose his stolen power.
My Opinion: This is one of the most obnoxious taunts in the game. The
voice alone is enough to annoy your opponents. Use it often to piss
people off. Just remember that if you got a power you want to keep,
then don't taunt until you kill all your enemies, because taunting will
make Kirby lose the power he got by copying.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Spinning Kick
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A on the ground. You can tilt the control
stick slightly so that the kick angles a bit up or down.
Damage: 10%
KKT score: 153%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby kicks forward with his left foot, then spins to the
right once around.
My Opinion: This move is pretty quick, but it's kind of useless since
it is very weak and has a short reach. With his excellent forward smash
Kirby doesn't have to bother with his move.
Rating: 1.5 out of 5
Ankle Poke
Buttons: Tilt stick downward + A on the ground
Damage: 9%
KKT score: 138%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Flat
Description: Kirby flattens himself against the ground and pokes forward
with his left foot.
My Opinion: This move doesn't do much either, but it does have a flat
flight path, so you can try to knock people off the edge with this if
you are creative. Not many other uses since Kirby's smashes aren't much
slower but a lot more powerful.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
Vertical Kick
Buttons: Tilt stick upward + A on the ground
Damage: 14%
KKT score: star finish at 108%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight up or close to it
Description: Kirby raises his right foot behind him and kicks straight
upwards. Sounds impossible huh? Well, it's possible with Kirby.
My Opinion: This move is pretty good for a strong attack. It's fast,
does pretty good damage and is powerful for a strong attack. Kirby can
use this move to juggle people on the ground or set up for a up smash.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Tackle
Buttons: A while running
Damage: 10%
KKT score: 150%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby yells and face plants on the ground and slides forward
to tackle anyone in front of him.
My Opinion: As just a running attack, this move is kind of crappy. It's
pretty weak, and the range seems to be a little shorter than other running
attacks. It's saving grace however is that this move is a part of Kirby's
formidable ground combo. With its fast speed and weak power, the tackle
sets up perfectly for Kirby's forward smash attack.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Lunge Kick
Buttons: Smash sideways + A while on the ground.
Damage: 17%
KKT score: 61%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby yells and goes into an angry expression while he
spins to left and lunges forward quickly with his left foot extended
in front to kick anyone in the way. Kirby actually moves forward during
the attack.
My Opinion: Believe it or not, this is actually the most powerful forward
smash attack in the game. It is also very fast, has lots of range and
combos very nicely. This is one of the reasons why people call Kirby
cheap. Kirby can easily string a bunch of kicks together to do some
major damage or he can bounce people off a wall with this and his down
smash. Since the power is so high, it will kill pretty easily too. Just
remember that this attack does give partial hits, so sometimes the person
might not fly as far as you think he/she should. This is a great offensive
attack and is Kirby's best KO move by far.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Spinning Splits
Buttons: Smash down + A while on the ground
Damage: 18%
KKT score: 89%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Horizontal
Description: Kirby yells, does a sideway split and spins around to the
right several times, catching people around him at their ankles.
My Opinion: This is another very quick smash from Kirby. It's primarily
used to clear out or if someone is trying to roll around Kirby. The
power is okay for a smash, but the flat flight path will make it harder
for people to come back on to the stage, and give Kirby a better chance
to spike. Use this and the lunge kick if Kirby is in close quarters
with his adversaries or comboing people against a wall.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Flip Kick
Buttons: Smash up + A while on the ground
Damage: 16%
KKT score: Star finish at 77%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight up for full hit. Regular for partial hit.
Description: Kirby shouts and does a back flip while sticking his right
foot out to kick anyone in front, above and even behind himself.
My Opinion: This smash is a bit slower than Kirby's other two smashes,
but it's still pretty quick. It's not very powerful for an up smash
but it still has enough power to get the job done. You can use the attack
to juggle people on the ground. It works especially well against heavy
character such as DK who can't escape until he has been kicked a few
times. Do note that the flip kick can give really weak partial hits
if you mistime it. Only people in front or above Kirby can receive full
hits. People behind Kirby will always get partial hits. Overall an okay
smash attack.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Pile Driver
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z + A) while on the ground, then push stick
forward, press A, press R, or wait for a few seconds.
Damage: 13%
KKT score: Star finish at 107%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Kirby's grab): Short
Flight Path: Steep Diagonal
Description: Kirby grabs the opponent with both hands and then flies
straight up to just below the vertical boundary with the opponent in
his hands, and falls down really fast, slamming the victim head first
against the ground. The impact will make Kirby jump back a bit and cause
an explosion that can damage other opponents. Kirby actually moves a
bit laterally during the throw which means sometimes both him and opponent
will fall straight into the pit. Kirby will die first in that situation
and even if the opponent dies also, Kirby does not gain a point.
My Opinion: This throw is one of the coolest throws in the game. It
looks pretty powerful, considering Kirby is pile driving people from
about 8 stories high right down to the ground. In reality, this move
is a bit weaker than it looks, but it's still pretty good. This throw
is hard to interrupt since Kirby flies off screen during the throw and
it does send people pretty high. Kirby has a very quick grab, so feel
free to grab an opponent who is blocking too long. Since the throw will
always slam the opponent on the highest platform available, it has fair
KO power.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Suplex
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z+A) while on the ground, then push stick
backward
Damage: 16%
KKT score: Star finish at 117%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Kirby's grab): Short
Flight Path: Steep Diagonal
Description: Kirby grabs the opponent and slams the person on the ground
behind Kirby.
My Opinion: Despite the fact that this throw deals more damage, it is
actually weaker than the forward throw in terms of power. This throw
can also kill sideways but only at very high damage. If you want to
raise the opponent's damage, then use this throw, but if you want to
kill the opponent, the pile driver is a better bet.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Jump Kick
Buttons: A or R while in the air
Damage: 15%
KKT score: 85%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium Slow
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby sticks his left foot out in mid air to kick anyone
in front of him.
My Opinion: This kick is actually pretty strong. It can send people
pretty far and the KO rate isn't bad at all. If Kirby wants to knock
someone in front of him out while in the air, this is the move to use.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Forward Drill Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick forward in the air
Damage: up to 8 hits doing max 3% each, but most hits will do only 2%
KKT score: Very hard to test, but capable of killing sideways on very
high damage.
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular if the last hit connects, or else it has no power.
Description: Kirby points both feet forward and corkscrews very fast
to his right several times. Anyone in front of him will get hit by his
feet several times. The last hit will send the victim flying for a little
bit.
My Opinion: This move is primarily used to raise your opponent's damage.
It's not quite powerful enough to get Kirby KOs. It's almost impossible
to get all hits to connect and this move is not quite as good as Kirby's
downward drill kick. It's still useful for hitting people who happen
to be in front of Kirby, but it's not one of Kirby's better air moves.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Backward Two Feet Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick backwards in the air
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 92%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby sticks both feet backwards to kick anyone behind
him, then he somersaults forward to recover.
My Opinion: This move is pretty good air combat move. It is pretty fast,
recovery isn't long, reach is not bad and the power is good too. Use
it when someone is behind Kirby.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Cartwheel
Buttons: A or R + push stick upwards in the air
Damage: 10%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Long
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Kirby spreads his limbs out in jumping jack position and
cartwheels to his left in mid air.
My Opinion: I don't like this move, since it is weak and won't get any
KOs. However, it is not completely useless. This move can hit on all
sides of Kirby, which is a good thing, and it wil always bounce them
the same distance away. This move lasts longer than you think. You'll
know what I mean if you fight against some Kirby level 9s. This is their
favorite move and it can screw people's attacks up. Even though, the
low power and prioirty makes this move unsuited to offense.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Downward Drill Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick downwards in air
Damage: 3% times up to 10 hits
KKT score: none really, but is capable of spiking
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight down or very close to straight down when opponent
is in the air or straight up or regular if opponent is on the ground.
Description: This is like the forward drill kick, but Kirby drills downwards
at a slight angle. The last hit of the drill will send people flying
away on a regular flight path.
My Opinion: This is a good move in Kirby's arsenal. It is the best drill
kick in the game because it can do more damage than all other drill
kicks and it is an effective spiking tool. Because Kirby has mulitple
air jumps and a good recovery move, Kirby is a very flexible spiker
and can spike people well below the level of the edge. This move also
can knock people away, allowing Kirby room to recover. This is a pretty
good move that fits Kirby very nicely.
Rating: 5 ouf of 5
Swallow
Buttons: Press B to swallow an opponent. Hold the B button to keep trying
to suck someone in. Once Kirby has got someone, press A to spit the
person back out or press B to copy the person's special attack.
Damage: 10% for spitting, 6% for copying. The person who Kirby spits
out can do up to 30% (If it's DK who is the projectile) damage to another
opponent.
KKT score: It can't kill to person Kirby swallows, but it can kill other
people. An 30% hit should be quite powerful, but I never tested it for
KKT score since it's hard to do without two more people helping.
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Depends
Recovery: Medium Fast
Reach: Medium Long
Flight Path: Forward if Kirby spits, behind and above Kirby if he copies.
The projectile Kirby spits out will send victims flying at normal flight
path.
Description: This is one of Kirby's original abilities in his games.
Kirby will open his mouth to suck anyone in front of him in. This move
is a grab move and is therefore unblockable. Once Kirby has the victim
in his mouth, he can either press A to spit the person out as a star.
The victim doesn't travel very far but can deal a lot of damage to another
enemy in the way. The victim can control the flight path of the star.
Kirby can also copy the victim's B special attack and now use it as
his own B special attack. The victim will fly out above and behind Kirby.
Kirby's stolen power can be identified by the suit he is wearing. Here
is the list of moves that Kirby can steal and the costumes he will wear.
Stolen From: | Attack Name | Kirby's Costume |
Luigi | Fireball | Luigi's green cap |
Mario | Fireball | Mario's red cap |
DK | Giant Punch | DK's fur |
Link | Boomerang | Link's hat |
Samus | Charge Shot | Samus' helmet |
Captain Falcon | Falcon Punch | Falcon's helmet |
Ness | PK Fire | Ness' baseball cap |
Yoshi | Egg Lay | Yoshi's head skin |
Fox | Blaster | Fox's helmet and ears |
Pikachu | Thunder Jolt | Pikachu's head skin and tail |
Jigglypuff | Pound | Jiggly's ears and tuff of hair |
Other than
stealing powers from other characters, Kirby can also steal the power
of a Kirby who has a stolen power. The Kirby who gets swallowed will
lose his power and Kirby who did the swallowing gets the power. Kirby
can lose his power if he is hit by a hard blow, if he taunts or if he
dies.
Kirby can hold the opponent inside himself for a few seconds before
the opponent breaks free. The opponent can mash buttons to break free
faster. Kirby can swallow a person in mid air and try to kamikaze. Kirby
will die first in this attempt and will not gain a point even if the
opponent dies as well.
My Opinion: Kirby is the only character who has the ability to use other
people's moves. This is yet another reason why Kirby is so cheap. Kirby
can take people's moves and use it against them. The best move by far
to steal is the charge shot, since all Kirby lacks is a good projectile,
and the charge shot is the best projectile there is. My second choice
would be the Falcon Punch. I rate the Falcon Punch above the Giant Punch
because Kirby's arm is too short, so the reach of the Giant Punch is
greatly diminished, while the Falcon Punch has the fire falcon that
extends the reach of Kirby's stubby little arm. Kirby can also use other
people as projectiles for getting KOs, but it usually doesn't work since
the victim will usually steer away from other enemies. Depending on
which move Kirby steals, this ability can enhance Kirby's already impressive
offensive game by even more.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Final Cutter
Buttons: Push stick up + B. You can use the control stick to control
the whether Kirby moves a bit forward or backwards.
Damage: 8% + 2% + 3% if Kirby catches the victim at the start of the
move. 6% for the shock wave.
KKT score: Well above 300% for a sideway kill, but it can spike.
Startup: Medium Slow
Duration: Long (Until Kirby grabs an edge, hit the ground, or gets hit
out of the move)
Recovery: Slow
Range: Medium for the shock wave. Reach for the move is very long.
Flight Path: Normal for the shock wave, straight up if opponent is on
the ground and hit by the cutter or near vertical downwards if hit by
the cutter in its downward hit while in the air.
Description: Kirby will pull out a blue cutter like thingy with his
right hand and grab the cutter with both hands, jump upwards for a considerable
distance while twisting in mid air, and then bring the cutter down in
front of himself and fall down really fast. When Kirby hits the ground,
the impact will create a shockwave that travels in front of Kirby and
can damage anyone in its way. This is another one of Kirby's weird
abilities.
My Opinion: The final cutter is not much of an attack move, since it
doesn't kill all that often. It is however, a very good recovery move
that gives Kirby a lot of vertical. It is possible to spike with the
final cutter. A send down with the cutter is an instant kill, but it
is hard to time. I find that you can spike people down into a pit if
you catch someone in with the cutter when the victim is right next to
the edge. Since the cutter spikes at a slight angle, the victim will
still fall into the abyss. If you haven't figured out already, you spike
with the cutter's second hit. You can also kamikaze with the final cutter.
In this situation, Kirby will kill the opponent before he dies and will
get credit for the KO.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Stone
Buttons: Push stick down + B. Press B to transform back into Kirby,
or the transformation takes place after a few seconds in stone form.
Damage: 20%
KKT score: 73%
Startup: Slow
Duration: Depends on when Kirby transforms back.
Recovery: Slow
Reach: Very Very Long (the distance from Kirby to the ground below him)
Flight Path: 45 degrees
Description: Another one of Kirby's weird powers, Kirby will turn into
a stone (It looks more like a brown brick). If you do this on flat ground,
Kirby will just turn into the stone and uhh... stay there. Do this in
the air and Kirby will fall down really fast and hit people below him.
Kirby can transform back during the fall but he will fall for at least
about a second before he can transform back. The stone has very little
traction, so it will slide on a slanted surfaces, so watch out because
Kirby can slide off certain stages to his doom. The stone is invincible
against all attacks except throws, grab moves, the hammer (It can take
one hammer hit and still hold. The second hit will damage Kirby), Electro,
and the exploding lasers from the Arwing.
My Opinion: Another cheap move from Kirby. The transformations may be
slow, but once fully formed, the stone has enough priority to go through
a hammer. This is a great defense for people holding hammers. Show them
that they are not invincible. The stone is also quite powerful and sends
people pretty high, so star finishes aren't uncommon. Just remember
there's lag time for both startup and recovery, so don't over use this
move because other players will get used to it and make you pay for
the mistakes. The best time to use stone is when there are people below
Kirby and they are in the air. Feel free to stone these people, since
they can't block or roll away.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
