Background Info
Luigi is the less famous brother of Mario. He looks similar to Mario
except he wears a different colour costume, is taller, thinner, and
has a slightly different moustache and a higher pitched voice. He's
featured in many Nintendo games.
In the game, Luigi is at about the same weight as Mario, but can jump
higher. The two brothers share many identical moves, but there are a
number of attacks where Luigi differs from Mario, probably more than
you think there are.
To be able to use Luigi, you must complete the break the targets bonus
with all 8 original characters. You can do this during bonus stage practice
or during single player game. The last character you use to complete
the bonus will be challenged by Luigi at Peach's Castle. Beat him at
the one stock battle and you can use him. If you lose, just complete
the break the targets again with your best character and you'll be challenged
again. Hopefully, you can get him in one try. He's not that hard to
beat.
Personal Stage: Peach's Castle
Personal Symbol: Mushroom
Entrance: Luigi comes out an warp pipe that comes out from the ground
Character Choosing: Luiging does his fists of flurry and then yells
"Hoo Hoo!"
Costumes
C up: the original Luigi costume with the green cap and shirt, and the
purple suspender pants, white gloves, and brown shoes. This is the green
team costume.
C left: girly Luigi with pink shirt and cap and red pants. This is the
red team costume.
C down: Luigi with light blue cap and shirt and dark blue pants. This
is the blue team costume.
C right: a tanned Luigi with white cap and shirt, blue pants and no
gloves. Looks like a Jamaican version of Luigi.
Moves List
Weak Attack
Buttons: A, A, A, while on the ground
Damage: 2%+2%+4%
KKT score: over 300% for the 4% kick
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: This is actually Mario's punch punch kick combo
from the game Mario 64. Luigi first jabs with left, then with his right
fist, then kicks with his right foot while yelling each time he delivers
a blow.
My Opinion: This weak combo is fairly useless in most cases. However
when the opponent has high damage, it might be possible to use this
combo as a set up for a power hit. Still not that great.
Rating: 1.5 out of 5
Recovery Attack 1
Buttons: When lying back to the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi swipes both sides beside him with his legs and gets
back up. Luigi is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: Nothing to say about this really, since its your only attack
option when lying on the floor facing up. Can get Luigi back on the
offensive if you manage to hit an opponent. Useful for clearing people
who happen to stand too close to Luigi for their own good.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Recovery Attack 2
Buttons: When lying face down on the floor, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Same as the face up one. Luigi swipes both sides beside
him with his legs and gets back up. Luigi is invincible when he does
this.
My Opinion: It's Luigi's other recovery attack. Not much to say about
that. It happen less often than the first recovery attack since most
of the time victims of hard hits will lie face up.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 1
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage lower than 100%, press
A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi pulls himself up quickly and delivers a quick kick
with both feet. Luigi is invincible when he does this.
My Opinion: Edge attacks can save lives, if you can time them. This
attack can get edge guarders out of the way and therefore save Luigi
from danger. Use it only if no one's around or the edge guarder is standing
close to the edge. Experienced players will stand a bit away from the
edge if you (as any character) manages to hang on to it, so you need
to evaluate the situation before you use the edge attack.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Edge Attack 2
Buttons: When hanging on the edge with damage over 100%, press A
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Slow
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi slowly pulls himself back on to the stage, then delivers
a light kick to the ankles with his right foot. Luigi is invincible
when he does this.
My Opinion: This is worse than the low damage edge attack, but it's
the only thing Luigi has when he's over 100% damage. Same guidelines
as above.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Taunt
Buttons: L when on the ground
Damage: 1%
KKT score: none, constant power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Very Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi scuffs his heel against the floor while looking downwards
and hands behind his back.
My Opinion: Well, this is the only taunt in the game that can cause
damage. The offence part of this move is useless in real gameplay, but
it's fun to experiment with. The taunt itself isn't too good since it's
not very noticeable and has no sound effects.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (rated as a taunt, not as an attack)
Roundhouse Kick
Buttons: Tilt stick sideways + A on the ground. You can tilt the control
stick slightly so that the kick angles a bit up or down.
Damage: 10%
KKT score: 151%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi spins to his right and delivers a kick with his right
foot.
My Opinion: This is one of those moves that looks identical to Mario's
corresponding move but actually is not. This move does less damage than
Mario's and is less powerful. Of course, this doesn't really matter
since you'll rarely use this move anyways, unless you still haven't
learned how to smash. Not very useful in my opinion, and pretty weak
too.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Ankle Poke
Buttons: Tilt stick downward + A on the ground
Damage: 7%
KKT score: 221%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach: Short
Flight Path: slightly lower than regular, but not flat
Description: Luigi pokes with his left foot while in a crouching position.
My Opinion: One of the few moves where Luigi has a completely different
one than Mario. In this case, Luigi got the worse one. This is even
more useless than the roundhouse kick. It's pathetically weak and short
ranged. Don't bother trying this unless you are going for a bonus in
single player.
Rating: 1 out of 5. This is crap. Excuse my language.
Spinning Uppercut
Buttons: Tilt stick upward + A on the ground
Damage: 10%
KKT score: star finish at 113%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Short
Recovery: Slow
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Straight up
Description: Luigi spins to the left and punches straight upwards with
his right hand. He spins 360 degrees during the move.
My Opinion: This move isn't all that great, but it is the best strong
attack Luigi has. It can kill light characters and is a pretty fast
move. The lateral range for this move is short but the vertical range
is okay. You can use this move to setup for a headbutt or can use it
to juggle people with low damage. Not too bad, but not brilliant either.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Fists of Fury
Buttons: A while running
Damage: 2% times max. 5 hits
KKT score: none, no power at all
Startup: Fast
Duration: Long
Recovery: Slow
Reach: Short
Flight Path: None, since it's so weak
Description: Luigi closes his eyes, yells, and swings his fists like
a madman while running. Looks pathetic and such a let down of the name.
My Opinion: This is one of the worst moves in the game. It has no power,
has no purpose except to annoy, and it's easy for others to dodge it
or block it then lay the smackdown on Luigi. Need I say more? To be
honest, I use this fairly often when I use Luigi. This is because the
fists of fury is the only running move Luigi has, so there's no choice
when you try to run into a battle. Even though, avoid this move if you
can.
Rating: 1 out of 5
Power Punch
Buttons: Smash sideways + A while on the ground. You can tilt the control
stick so that the punch angles up a bit.
Damage: 15%
KKT score: 85%
Startup: Medium Slow
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium Long
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi will pull his right fist back and swings it forward
with force while yelling at the same time.
My Opinion: Finally, we're on to the good stuff. This is another one
of those "looks identical to Mario's but is not" moves. Again,
this move is weaker than Mario's power punch. For a long time, I thought
the two brothers had the same forward smash, but after some testing,
I found out they are different. Even though this move is kind of weak
for a smash attack, it is still pretty strong and can KO often. It has
slightly longer range than the breakdance smash but is weaker and only
hits in one direction. Besides, you can't help not use it. It's still
a lot better than the roundhouse kick.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Breakdance
Buttons: Smash down + A while on the ground
Damage: 17%
KKT score: 78%
Startup: Medium
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi does the break dance while yelling by supporting
himself using his arms and sweeps both legs in front of him and then
behind him. The legs rotate in a clockwise direction if looking from
straight above Luigi.
My Opinion: This is identical to Mario's breakdance smash. I think this
is one of the best down smashes in the game. It's got power, reach,
and isn't too slow. I love using this knock people out of the way. This
smash will earn Luigi a fair number of KOs. You should use this when
the opponent is rolling around Luigi, very close to Luigi or if there
are multiple opponents around Luigi. This is a great clear out move
and can be used to get Luigi out of tight spots.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Whiplash Headbutt
Buttons: Smash up + A while on the ground
Damage: 19%
KKT score: star finish at 59%
Startup: Medium fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Slow
Reach: Medium when considering the vertical reach. It can also hit people
who stand beside Luigi. The forward reach is longer than the back, but
both are pretty short.
Flight Path: Straight up
Description: Luigi yells as he pulls his head back, then headbutts upwards
and forward with tremendous force.
My Opinion: This is the best up smash in the game hands down. I know
it is kind of slow, especially the recovery time, but it makes up for
it in pure power. Notice the very low KKT score. Remember that KKT is
tested on a relative low part of the stage, so if the score will be
even lower if tested on a higher platform. This smash is very powerful
and has a great KO rate, especially against light characters. Even DK
can't escape doom if he's over 110%. Other good things about this smash
is that not only can Luigi his people above him, but he can hit people
who stand close beside him. Also this smash has no partial hits, which
means all hits delivered are at the maximum allowed power. I use this smash
to defend against air attacks, juggle, and of course, send people into
the sky. For the curious people, it's true; Mario has the same smash.
Rating: 5 out of 5. It's that damned good.
Spin Toss
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z + A) while on the ground, then push stick
forward, press A, press R, or wait for a few seconds
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 87%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Luigi's grab): Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi grabs an opponent with both hands, then spins to
his right while holding on to the victim, and lets go after spinning
around once.
My Opinion: One more of those looks identical to Mario's moves but is
not. You must be thinking that I must have a lot of free time and have
no life so I could find this out. Well, I have to admit it's true, but
I like to have free time. Don't you? At the beginning, when I tested
this move on my N64 emulator, I thought damage was wrong, but after
checking on my system, I found out that it really did 16%. Anyways,
Luigi's forward throw is actually quite strong and sends people fairly
far. It's good to have a strong forward throw because it's easy to get
into a throwing frenzy with a forward throw than a back throw. This
throw is also pretty fast, so there's less chance of it being interrupted.
This throw can also get rid of people around Luigi because Luigi can
use the victims as a weapon while he's throwing.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Triple Spin Toss
Buttons: Grab (press R or Z+A) while on the ground, then push stick
backward
Damage: 12%
KKT score: 105%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Long
Recovery: Fast
Reach (of Luigi's grab): Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi grabs a victim with both hand, then starts rotating
to the left and yelling "Yahoo!" at the same time. He spins
around two and a half times with the opponent in his hands then lets
go, sending the opponent away.
My Opinion: You must be getting sick of this by now, but this is another
moves that looks like Mario's but is actually not. In this case, Luigi
got the short end of the straw by getting a weak back throw. This is
one of the weakest back throws in the game. It has a hard time KOing
people, especially heavy people like DK. Other than the power difference
(which is pretty significant by the way), this throw is identical to
Mario's back throw. It's a pretty funny throw to watch and Luigi can
bash people away by using his victim as a sort of club, but this throw
is just too weak to be good.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Jump Kick
Buttons: A or R while in the air
Damage: 14%
KKT score: 103%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium Long
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Short
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi extends his left foot out forward a little bit and
holds this pose for a while.
My Opinion: This is a so-so move. It has acceptable power and damage,
but the reach is too short. This move is also hard to time because only
the initial hit gets full damage. Like almost all air move, the partial
hit from this move is very weak. In the case of Luigi (and Mario), you
are better off using their forward and backward kicks that have better
reach and more power. The only case that I can think of the this move
will do better is when there are opponent in front and behind Luigi
at the same time, since this move hits a little bit behind too. Then
again, you might be better off using the tornado than this.
Rating: 3 out of 5. Luigi has better kicks in the air than this one.
Corkscrew Jump Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick forward in the air
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 91%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi extends both feet forward to kick and corkscrews
in the process.
My Opinion: This is a pretty good air move. It isn't too slow and it's
pretty powerful. This kick will easily kill light opponents, but it'll
take very high damage to kill the likes of DK and Yoshi. One annoying
thing about this move is that on many occasions it tends to send the
victims in the opposite direction than you expect them to fly, so when
you try to KO a person but the kick sends them to the centre of the
stage, it can be frustrating. This is Luigi's standard air combat move
and should be used often along with the back aerial kick. It's also
pretty good for jumping off the stage and kicking recovering people
away.
Rating: 4 out of 5. Booting people in the face is fun. I don't mean
in real life; I mean in the game.
Superman Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick backwards in the air
Damage: 16%
KKT score: 91%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium
Flight Path: Regular
Description: Luigi extends both feet backwards to kick anyone behind
him. For a short moment there he looks like Superman flying in the air.
The kick completes and Luigi somersaults foward and goes back to neutral
air position.
My Opinion: Same thing as the forward kick. Use it to kick people in
the air. This is also a pretty good move.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Flip Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick upwards in the air
Damage: 12%
KKT score: Star finish at 124%
Startup: Medium Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Medium
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: Ranges from vertical to 45 degrees
Description: Luigi flips backwards, extending his left foot out to kick
anyone in front, above and even slightly behind him in the air.
My Opinion: I don't really like this move. One reason is that it is
real easy for you to time it incorrectly and deliver a partial hit or
miss. The other reason is that this move is weak. Luigi can kill Jiggly
or Kirby with this move, but you are not likely to see the heavyweights
get KOed by this. This move can't really juggle either, but it is your
only choice as Luigi for an aerial move that hits upwards, so you are
stuck with it.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Drill Kick
Buttons: A or R + push stick downwards in air
Damage: 3% time max 8 hits
KKT score: none. This move can't spike and has no power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Medium
Recovery: Slow if Luigi hits the ground, fast if he stays in the air.
Reach: Medium Short
Flight Path: None, since this move has no power. It does push opponents
back when they are on the ground and stuns them a little bit.
Description: Luigi will corkscrew downward with his body at a slight
diagonal angle to the ground. This is accompanied by funny sound effects.
My Opinion: This drill isn't a very good move. It can't spike and has
almost no power at all. It doesn't even do that much damage since it's
very unlikely Luigi will land all the hits. However, the one redeeming
factor for this move is its ability to buffer into a fire punch. The
drill kick/fire punch combo is one of Luigi's deadliest weapons and
mastering this drill kick will help your chance of successfully pulling
the combo off. Remember to Z cancel when Luigi hits the ground. This
shortens the recovery time so Luigi is more likely able to strike first.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5, only because of the fire punch combo.
Fireball
Buttons: B
Damage: 6%
KKT score: none, no power
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Fast
Range: Medium, about two thirds way across Kirby's stage
Flight Path: none. The fireball can push an opponent back if he/she
is on the ground and cause stunning.
Description: Luigi swings his right hand forward and a green fireball
will come out of his hand and fly straight forward, accompanied by classic
fireball sound effect. The speed of the fireball isn't very fast. The
fireball will disappear in smoke when it runs out of range. It will
bounce back if it hits a wall. If the fireball hits an opponent or an
item or gets cancelled out, it will explode, burning and stunning the
thing that gets hit.
My Opinion: Luigi's fireball is an okay projectile, but personally I
like Mario's better. The range of Luigi's fireball isn't long and it
goes straight instead of bounces. This move is useful when trying to
raise people's damage up or you can use this to hit people when they
are trying to jump back on to the stage. The stun caused by the explosion
will hinder their recovery.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Super Jump Punch/ Coin Punch/ Fire Punch/ Flaming Jump Punch... (so many names)
Buttons: Push stick up + B. You can use the stick to control whether
Luigi jumps left of right.
Damage: 25% for fire punch
KKT score: star finish at 34%
Startup: Fast
Duration: Short
Recovery: Slow
Reach: Long since Luigi
jumps upwards when he does this.
Flight Path: Straight up
Description: One of the classic moves of the Mario brothers. Luigi will
holds his right fist up and jump considerable distance upwards with
the classic sound effects of course. The horizontal distance is kind
of short. Usually when someone gets hit by the punch, one measly coin
pops out and the opponent take a pathetic 1% damage and barely moves.
Sounds like this move is crap right? Yeah, if the coin thing happens,
but once in a while, when you time it just right, a baseball bat smash
sound will be heard and Luigi will send opponents rocketing into the air
in pain and on fire with his super duper flaming coin punch of DEATH!!!
AHHHHHHHHH!!! Okay, I need to calm down... but this is basically what
this move looks like. After using this move, Luigi can't do anything
else until he lands or gets hit by something.
My Opinion: This move can be godly and can put fear into your opponents
if you know how to do it right. If you screw up just a little, Luigi
will get one coin out of each opponent and cause 1% of damage, while
leaving himself vulnerable to retailiation. The only way a fire punch
will happen is when Luigi is standing very close to the target or more
accurately that his right fist has to overlap the target when he initiates
the punch. Only the first part of the punch can set people on fire.
One way to pull this off is by drill kicking the target first then fire
punch because the drill kick will stun the target and put Luigi in the
right position. This combo is not easy to pull off because there's a
significant lag time after the drill kick hits the ground. You need
to Z cancel to shorten the lag so Luigi can recover and go into the
fire punch. Usually Luigi won't be able to just jump in or walk into
someone and fire punch them, because they'll notice him and give him
a painful reminder not to try that stupid stunt again. Of course, if
there is an opportunity to be taken advantage of, then go for it. For
example, if Samus tries to grab Luigi and misses, walk Luigi over and
send Samus up into the sky to remind her not to try that again.
This is also Luigi's third jump. It's not bad because it gains Luigi
significant altitude and has a high priority that usually will go through
an edge guarder's move. However, the horizontal component of the jump
punch leaves somethings to be desired. Oh well, nothing is perfect.
Rating: 4 out of 5 for the fire punch and recovery function. 1 for the
coin punch.
Luigi Tornado
Buttons: Push stick down + B. Tap B to make Luigi move slightly upwards
if he's on the ground or hover in mid air if he's in the air. If someone
is caught in the tornado, tapping B will move Luigi up even more. Use
the control stick to move Luigi left and right during the tornado.
Damage: 18%. This is not a mistake. You might be thinking that Tony
has gone out of his mind. I assure you that I'm fine. Usually the tornado
delivers a 15% hit but the last hit delivered by the tornado causes
18% of damage. This hit sounds deeper and louder than the normal hits
the tornado delivers. If you don't believe me, then go test it yourself.
KKT score: star finish at 54% for the 18% hit
Startup: Fast
Duration: Long
Recovery: Slow
Reach: Medium Short, but you can move Luigi a bit laterally.
Flight Path: Straight up or steep diagonal
Description: Luigi holds up his fists, yells "Yahoo!" and
spins around rapidly. Anyting that happens to be beside him at the time
will be hit. Luigi will stop with his arms and legs in jumping jack
position.
My Opinion: This tornado is very different than Mario's, even though
they look the same. Luigi's tornado delivers one big hit that sends
people flying. This move is actually pretty powerful, even with the
15% hit. The last hit of the move is even more powerful than the headbutt,
which means it's extremely powerful, but it's hard to pull off. The
bad thing about the tornado is that it lasts too long, which give other
opportunity to attack Luigi. I usually use this move to clear out space
around Luigi and to KO people who have high damage. Careful usage will
yield you a number of kills.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
